"That Sinking Feeling" is the first episode of Darkwing Duck. It is the first single-part episode of the series, and the first episode to air, originally being broadcast as a "spring preview" episode on the Disney Channel. Darkwing Duck creator Tad Stones has stated this to be his personal favorite episode.[1]

Synopsis[]

A sinister genius marketer and mole named Moliarty plots to plunge everything into darkness and seize control of the surface city of St. Canard - by stealing buildings and creating a beam to lock the moon into an eternal eclipse, with the help from his fellow race.

Memorable quotes[]

"The city of St. Canard is home to a thousand criminals. But not one dares make a move, for this city has a shadowy guardian who hunts them like a phantom in the darkness. I am that guardian. I am the terror that flaps in the night. I am the winged scourge that pecks at your nightmares. I am Darkwiiing Duck! And I am... totally bored out of my skull!"
—Darkwing's opening monologue

Moliarty: What! What happened? [Darkwing laughs maniacally] Is someone laughing at me? I hate that.
Darkwing: I am the terror that flaps in the night. I am the winged scourge that pecks at your nightmares. I am Darkwing Duck!

"Be warned! My sidekick and I are masters of every known martial art! [the trash can lands on him and Launchpad] Except trash can tai-chi. I believe that's a new one."
—Darkwing

Darkwing: Don't get discouraged, Launchpad! It seems only yesterday that we escaped a trap every bit as menacing as this!
Launchpad: I dunno. Being eaten alive by slugs sorta stands out in my mind as being unique.
Darkwing: I suppose he does get points for imagination.

"Darkwing Duck to Ratcatcher. Code words: Let's get dangerous!"
—Darkwing summoning the Ratcatcher (and providing the iconic shot of his catch phrase for the theme song)

Launchpad: You sure about this, DW?
Darkwing: It's like the chicken says, Launchpad: "I knew the job was dangerous when I took it!"

"The daring Darkwing Duck defies death yet again and defeats the despicable denizens of darkness!"
—Darkwing after the sunlight sends the moles (minus Moliarty) back underground

Darkwing: Laughing gas? You shoot a madman with LAUGHING GAS?!
Gosalyn: Well, it wasn't labeled!
Launchpad: At least he's a happy madman!

Trivia[]

  • This is the second Disney TVA episode to premiere on September 7 after TaleSpin premiering in syndication with the four-part series premiere "Plunder and Lightning".

Notes[]

  • Chronologically and in production order, this episode marks Moliarty's first appearance. Unfortunately, due to being aired on ABC, it is placed after Moliarty's later appearances in the syndicated episodes in the order used by the DVD sets and digital releases.
